Pall Mall, London, May 14th

My Lord,

I am desirous of collecting information on the subject of the great hurricane which passed over the South of England on the 29th, 30th, and 31st March; in the course of which the "Royal Adelaide" steamer, was lost off Margate, with her crew and passengers, on the night of the 30th.

I imagine the centre of this hurricane to have passed over the Channel Islands, by Paris, Frankfort on the Mayn, and Dresden, at the rate of two hundred miles in the twenty-four hours; being preceded and followed by calms, which defined well the duration and course of this particular body of wind. The interval between these calms varied, according to locality, from forty-eight to seventy-two hours; the more violent period of the hurricane from eighteen to twenty-four hours.

The points to which my inquiries are directed are
1stly. The extent of country affected by this wind?
2ndly. The force with which it prevailed, and in what directions it blew?
3rdly. The duration of time between the rising and final subsiding of this wind; the period and duration of its greatest force, and the weather which accompanied it?

I subjoin a list of places at which your Lordship's influence might obtain me useful information; and probably at many of them there are scientific observers from whom your Lordship's agents could procure me copies of their Meteorological Records for a few days and after Eastern Sunday, March 31st.

I have the honour to be,
Your Lordship's obedient Servant,
F.P.B. MARTIN

To the Lord Viscount PALMERSTON, &c. &c. &c.
